Valentino Rossi’s MotoGP racing team has formally announced a new title sponsor after months of confusion with an alleged Saudi sponsor.
Italian finance solutions company Mooney was announced as VR46 Racing Team‘s new title sponsor following Sky Italia’s departure after a 8-year run with the Tavullan team.
VR46 is joining MotoGP as a full-entry team this year using satellite Ducati bikes, after having shared the garage with Esponsorama last season.
Rossi’s team had previously announced a partnership with TANAL, which claimed that Saudi state-owned oil company Aramco was to become VR46’s title sponsor – claims that were later rebutted by Aramco CEO Talal Al-Marri and multiple statements thereafter.
Decalspotters and motorcycling publication MisterHelmet’s investigations concluded that the TANAL deal was a coup attempt to scam the team.
None of the $18 million that were promised to VR46 never appeared and all logos related to the fraudulent entity disappeared during post-season testing.
Mooney was launched in 2020 after the merge of payments brand SisalPay and banking solutions Banca 5 (Intesa Sanpaolo Group) in Italy.
The length and financial details of the deal between Mooney and VR46 haven’t been disclosed by both parties – Decalspotters understands it’s a 1-year deal with an estimated six-figure.
Mooney projects to offering added value through “advanced fintech services and payment systems” on its network of over 45 thousand points of sale throughout Italy.
“Tying the name of Mooney to such a prestigious reality as VR46 Racing Team is a real declaration of intent for our company, which confirms itself as a leading player in the payment and mobility services scenario. Speed, security, innovation and ability to adapt to constantly evolving customer needs are values that Mooney shares with VR46 Racing Team, which brings around the world Italian excellence, talent and technology in some of the most competitive contexts of world sport.”Emilio Petrone, Mooney CEO
“We are extremely proud of the partnership built with VR46 Racing Team to give life to an agreement on an international scale, wide-ranging and intending to implement innovative projects. The juxtaposition and the synergies developed between our two realities will be able to offer concrete benefits to customers, bringing them to become even more familiar with the Fintech world.”Salvatore Borgese, Mooney General Manager Commercial & Banking Services
Mooney branding will be present in all of VR46’s official communications – including bike livery, rider suit, teamwear and hospitality.
The sponsorship agreement expands onto both MotoGP and Moto2 teams as well as its Riders Academy and Valentino Rossi’s GT prospects.
“I am happy to have an Italian company like Mooney, leader in the world of proximity payments, by our side from the upcoming season. We share the strategy of developing young Italian talents and the constant search for performance improvement. Mooney, besides being Title Sponsor of our Team in the MotoGP, will also support us in the VR46 Riders Academy and in my first racing season in the world of four wheels.”Valentino Rossi, Mooney VR46 Racing Team Owner
”We are really proud of the path that led us to the debut in MotoGP. The Mooney VR46 Racing Team will be the evolution of the project started eight seasons ago with the partnership with Sky Italia that allowed us to win the World Drivers’ title in 2018, the Teams’ title in 2020 and to become a reference team in the lower categories of the Championship. We chose the right people, animated by the same commitment and passion. Our drivers have the potential to give us great satisfaction and make us have fun. We are confident that we will soon reach the level of the most competitive MotoGP teams, a common goal also in Moto2 where we hope to remain one of the reference teams.”Alessio Salucci, Mooney VR46 Racing Team Director
